Much of the Hudson River flowing by Orange and Ulster counties received acceptable quality ratings after recent tests by Riverkeeper, the environmental watchdog. Black Panther member from Kingston charged with selling guns to federal agents

A longtime Kingston community activist and member of the New Black Panthers Party has been arrested for selling guns to federal agents, according to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office. Ismail Shabazz, 60, whose birth name is Garry Faulkner, has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree criminal sale of a firearm, violent felonies.

Tot rescued at camp pool in Ellenville

There were some scary moments at a camp pool on Ulster Heights Road Friday evening when a toddler fell into water over his head; police and an EMS crew responded, but in the end, the child appeared to be OK. State police and Ulster County sheriff's deputies said the child, a 3-year-old boy, was in the water for less than a minute; his dad pulled him out, and the child appeared to be breathing normally when authorities arrived on the scene.

Police searching for suspect that took them on high-speed chase

Police chased a speeding vehicle south on Route 32 Monday morning and are now on the lookout for the driver, according to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office. The chase stemmed from a call in the Rosendale area between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. The driver, who has not been identified, followed Route 32 between Kingston and Rosendale south, toward Rosendale, at speeds reaching triple digits, according to police radio.

The chairman of the Wallkill Fire District's Board of Commissioners stole nearly $240,000 from the fire district to fund his lavish lifestyle, law enforcement authorities charged Monday. The arrest and arraignment of 38-year-old Michael Denardo of Wallkill was announced by Ulster County District Attorney Holley Carnright's office in Kingston and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.  Denardo allegedly convinced a fellow board member into co-signing blank checks, which he wrote out to his wife and then cashed for personal use.
