Lecturers Reveal History of Slavery in Ulster

In fact, not only did New York State once have the highest number of enslaved African-Americans north of the Mason-Dixon line but in 1790, Ulster County was one of the four top slave-holding counties in the state. The presenters' research revealed that a number of the county's largest slave owners lived in the portion of the Shawangunk Mountains Region presently occupied by the Town of Wawarsing and the Town of Shawangunk.
